Exactly sixty years ago, Indian Cinema which was mostly portrayal of drama at that time saw something which they could feel with their heart. It was not only something they could see but also sense.
PATHER PANCHALI was directed by Satyajit Ray and it was the first installment in his APU Trilogy. It follows the life of a boy “APU” from his childhood and PATHER PANCHALI was potrayal of his childhood in his village in Calcutta.
The first dialogue of every great films tell the rest of the story and in this movie “Don’t pluck the fruits! We would run out of them soon!” was the dialogue that a middle-class woman speaks to DURGA ,sister of Apu who were poor. This dialogue briefs the rest of the film that it is going to be pains of needy. And the movie is well directed that the essence of dialogue would be felt when the film ends. Though it deals with the life of Apu, Ray integrated the screenplay in a way that it also tells the life of others, most importantly the old woman. She steals Kitchen items which would often agitate Apu's mother that she was the bad inspiration for Durga to steal Fruits from neighbor garden. The life of old people shown in the movie would be very moving when old woman few minutes before her death drinks water and pour the remain to a plant she was growing. The director had shown the complete circle of life in that one shot. And one of the most important shots in history of Indian Cinema, Apu running across the train affected the audience of that time than any other contemporary film shots.
This movie initiated the term parallel Cinema in India like the French new wave. The not so good father in the movie actually reflected the confusion and unemployment during the time. In Apu's school scene the discussion between his teacher and a old man proved how Art had affected Calcutta and Bengalis.
The climax is one of the most hard hitting ones and especially with minimal dialogues ,that is why it’s a pure film. The film ends with a shot of Apu and his parents were moving to the town for employment and life. This shot shows the primary reason for India becoming globalised.
Though this movie is a drama at it’s genre, it is a standing testimony of India before and after Independence that is mentalities of people are same and their problems are same only time changed!
That reflection shot of Durga and Apu running behind the vendor who was going to the house of rich woman is what India was and is!
